Carmel Sullivan is a professional artist and early childhood educator who believes in the idea of community support for families. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Sullivan lived in Australia during her young adulthood and moved to the United States in the 1980s. She studied art at the Boulder Academy of Fine Arts in Colorado and her painting work ranges from Kabuki Theatre murals to Old Dutch Master style paintings.
During the late 1980s she co-founded Boss Disks, a computer supplies firm. During the 1990s she owned and managed an antique store in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles called Eclectic Treasures, which she sold after the birth of her son Cooper in 1991.
Sullivan comes from a large family of seven children, which may explain why the notion of child-centered education has always been dear to her heart. She firmly believes in the Resources for Infant Educators (RIE) philosophy that teaches parents to honor and respect their children in every interaction. This attitude is reflected in her mission for CoAbode.
The idea for CoAbode came out of Sullivan's own experience of feeling alone. After her divorce she started talking to other single moms and found they were dealing with the same loneliness issues. Many suffer atrocious living conditions. It struck Sullivan that there should be a reliable resource to help single mothers connect with each other for house sharing purposes. Women in general like to connect with each other but for single moms in particular, connecting with another woman in the same situation could make a huge improvement in their day-to-day lives.
As a single mom, Sullivan knows first hand that the environment in which children are raised is crucial to their emotional and spiritual development. Sullivan founded CoAbode to help single mothers connect with each other, share resources and go home at the end of the day knowing they don't have to raise their children alone.
